CHANGE OF SONG

Because we decided to change our music video idea we had to change the song in order to fit the new idea. Therefore we chose the song DJ got us fallin in love by Usher. The lyrics in the song relate to our video because in our music video it is shown that the DJ is shooting a cupid arrow at each girl making them fall in love with the gym instructor.

OUR LYRICS

The lyrics are vital in our music video because we will need to make sure that our actors are able to lip sync to the song whilst dancing. This can be quite difficult and therefore we are going to limit the amount of lip syncing needed by cutting parts of the song and just dancing rather than singing to the music.

Risk Assessment

  • As we will be using expensive gym equipment we will have to be careful when using some of the machines as they are very expensive and difficult to replace.
  • We will also be using weights as well as the expensive gym equipment, so we will have to handle them with care as if we have an accident with any of the equipment then it could lead to a serious injury.
  • We need to make sure that all the actors in our music video know the exercise routine off by heart so that our video looks professional and well presented.
  • We will also be filming in one of our cars which could cause a potential risk as the filming may be a distraction to the driver.
  • As we will be filming in a gym, we will have to check in advance if we are allowed to film there and check the opening and closing times to avoid disappointment when it comes to our shoot day.
  • We would also need to handle all the DJ equipment with care as it is expensive and hard to replace.
  • The actors should stand an arms length apart during the exercise class to avoid hitting each other by accident and causing any injuries.
  • Lastly, we need to make sure that none of our group lose or break the camera equipment as it is expensive and belongs to the school. To prevent this, we should make sure that we handle the equipment with care and keep it in a safe place when it is not being used.

OUR STORYBOARD

FEEDBACK ON OUR ANAMATIC

The feedback that we received was very useful in allowing us to see what mistakes we may have made and therefore what we can improve on. For example making improvements on getting each image in time with the music to enable us to visualise our music video clearer if each image matches the beat of the song.

ANAMATIC

We created our anamatic by taking individual photos of each scene on the storyboard. After this we inserted them into a program called 'iMovie' and adding the soundtrack to it. Creating our anamatic really helped us to gain an insight into the way that the music and scenes work together. It allowed us to visualise our idea and narrative better as well as how we are going to film them. Furthermore we learnt how to rhythmically cut to the beat and therefore we were able to match what was happening on the screen to the music. As well as this it also helped us to realise what camera angles that we wanted to include in our music video for example, more wide shots of the dancers exercising to cut on the beat alongside the close-ups of their routines. Moving forward we know that we need to improve on a few things, one of which is the length of the shots that we took as the shot duration was too long, as well as possibly adding another narrative strand or focus more on the DJ in the studio as this well help to enhance the video and sell the artists image.

CREATIVE WAYS TO IMPROVE CAMERA AND EDITING SKILLS

Creative ways to improve camera and editing skills

We have looked at how to make our work look more professional. For example using the no film school in order to help us improve our camera and editing skills for our music video through genre in order to heighten the selling of the artists image.

In stranger things they used different shots.
For example:
- a close up of the girl at the start with a black background.
-They also used the ‘tilt’ effect to give the opportunity of transitions between shots.
- Depth of field effect
- Cut away shots to cut away from the lyrics
- Pan/ whip pan
- Dutch tilt

After watching the video stranger things I learnt that using an effect to fade in and out from one scene to the next heightens the suspense drawing in the audience more. I also learnt using a panning shot from one character to another in slow motion creates more tension for the audience which is more interesting.

Furthermore I liked how in stranger things they used a 'tilt down' from one character and faded it into another scene as this caught my attention and made me more anxious so want to watch more. To emphasis on this the dark lighting used here also added to the tension of the scene.

From watching stranger things I learnt clever editing techniques to use in order to merge different shots I will film for an extra effect to keep the audience intrigued.

MOOD BOARD

We decided to create a mood board that would include a range of photos to represent our music video and its narrative. In order to do this we depicted the aspects of our music video idea and searched for photos that may represent it.

Our mood board further influenced our idea from looking at photos of people working out as this gave us inspiration of outfit ideas such as leotards and leggings. We also got inspiration for the DJ for our lighting as we used flashing lights for a strobe effect. Looking at photos of gyms also helped us as we could see what equipment we could use for our video which helped us planning different routines we would film.

BELOW IS OUR MOOD BOARD

CHANGE OF OUR IDEA

We originally as a group came up with 4 different ideas. The main one being a boy who expresses himself through dance. However we decided not to do this idea as we found it to basic and similar to a lot of music videos. Therefore as a group we have changed our idea.

Analysis of different music genres

Laura Mulvey and the male gaze

Laura Mulvey and the male gaze in music videos
Laura discussed how the camera assumes the place of the male spectator which therefore make the audience view the male perspective in music videos. This highlights how the male gaze shows how men objectify women whereas men are seen as objects. The camera also uses more slow motion shots, tilts and pans of female characters to show them being objectified by the male gaze.

Example of the male gaze is Rihanna music video

In her music there is a lot of close ups of her body, this represents the male perspective of what they see in a women. There is also lots of quick cuts of Rhianna dressed in a sexual way which are shot at different angles.

My video on Negus, Dyer and Goodwin

Hurtwood House music video analysis

-       -I like the range of shot choices that they used, especially at the beginning where they showed us close ups of all their hands. I like how they used quick cuts between the lead artist and the people spray painting in the background. They used medium close up shots a lot when focusing on the singer, which I think was a good idea because it signified there power and to highlight they are the main singers to give them more stardom. I also like the location choice for the video, as I feel it fits the genre of the song very well as it is a bit mysterious which hypes the video.

-       -The narrative for the video isn't clear. I think it is about mischievous people showing their emotions through the art of graffiti. The people in the video are fighting against authority and give off a rebellious vibe. This can attract people to listen to their music as they aspire to have the same outlook on life to rebel against authority.

-       -The music video matches the genre really well. The genre for the song is alternative pop and this video is not normal, so it is alternative. It doesn't play on the normal ideas of role models, as they are spray painting on walls and defying authority, which shows them as rebels.

-       -The artist's image here is clear. The artist is a rebel who likes to defy authority and do whatever she wants without a cause for concern.

Different age groups opinions on music videos

Analysis of feedback

From this feedback I learnt that there are differences in peoples ages of how they feel about music videos. Within the same age of 17 everyone I asked had a different opinion on music videos. As some people I asked found that they did enjoy watching music videos where as others said they would watch them with friends. I also found that I thought the people I interviewed of the age 17 would say that pop was there favourite genre but actually I found they prefer R&B or classical which was surprising to me.

Furthermore I found that the older generation of people I asked don't watch music videos whereas the younger people do. This shows how music videos are more orientated for a specific generation.
