CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN - COCOON ANALYSIS

To begin with Catfish and the bottlemen are an Indie rock band. The song ‘cocoon’. To begin with the narrative of this music video links to my idea for my own music video. The narrative matches the lyrics of how the male actor sees a girl as he walks into a mental home and from his first look at her he falls straight into having feelings for her. He then begins to follow her around and spend time with her every day. He then gets puled away from her and tied down by the doctors and staff. This matches the lyrics of how he thought she would stay with him even though he’s going to be taken away by the doctors. This narrative links to the genre ‘indie rock’ because it’s different to an ordinary pop music video with bright colours and stereotypical characteristics. This music is shown to be different as the colours are darker and the performers are dressed in casual clothing rather than looking fashionable and covered in makeup. This represents the indie genre, as they don’t highlight the standard attributes to a music video.

Furthermore catfish and the bottlemen are not featured in the music video which highlights the artists are trying to create more meaning through the lyrics as the music video emphasizes on the emotion of sadness of the song so that people will think deeper into the lyrics. . This is also emphasized, as there is no lip-syncing. The star of the image is an actor called Edward Hayten. To further creates the emotion each beat and lyric matches every action in the video. So for example when the lyrics say ‘rest on me’ the woman rests her head on the man’s shoulder to signify her loneliness in the ‘mental home’.

Another example of the lyrics matching the visuals is when he says ‘F*** if they try to get to us’ the camera cuts to a doctor controlling them in doing exercise

Another example is when it says ‘ if you wanna act more drunk than usual’ the visuals in the music video show the two actors  raise there glasses together and drink water which is symbolizing the idea of alcohol as both drinks also have pills in. to highlight on all of these examples there are lots of quick cuts to signify each action.

Finally there is an intertextual reference as to the movie ‘its kind of a funny story’ as the male character that checks himself into the psychiatric ward falls for a girl also in the ward.
