EVALUATION TASK 4

How my use of digital technolgoies in the research, planning and creation of my product improved during A2.

I researched into music videos for inspiration. For example I looked at Ariana Grande’s music video ‘side to side’ and Eric Prydz ‘call on me’ video. This was because these videos had a similar performance and narrative to my music video because they involve a gym or dance routine which helped for my video as it gave me ideas of what workouts I should use in my music video. I also looked on youtube at similar artists to mine such as chris brown for inspiration on shots for my video, such as lots of close ups and medium shots of the artist. For inspiration and to get a better understanding about DJs I looked at different djs such as DJ EZ for inspiration of props and lighting and also dance actions that DJs use to emphasis on our stars image of being a DJ. This influenced me as it gave me ideas on using strobe lighting as many djs use different colour lights to project on their audience. Also from looking at gym routines I got an idea of what type of warm ups our girls would be doing in my video.

The use of mobile phones enabled me to record footage of other people to get feedback. I used an iphone 7 to interview my class and family members who were of my target audience of 16-24 to understand what they look for in an artist so that I would make my artist appealing to that audience so he would be more popular and gain views. I asked them questions such as what sort of look would you find appealing on an artist to attract them to watching a video. From my feedback I learnt people look at an image of the artist first this being there fashion, the audience I looked at preferred a star who was dressed stylish and in trendy clothing therefore I made sure our artist wore fashionable clothing such as a tight white t shirt and skinny jeans.

I further used the internet as a research tool to look into more detail of the pop genre and our star image. The internet also helped as I got to look into different theorists such as Richard Dyers idea of star image to get a better understanding of how effective the star image is to help develop my star image to attract to the audience. By also using the internet I was able to find out facts about pop music videos and pop artists. For example pop music videos tend to focus mostly on the star image which mostly involves fashion. I also found that when researching about our digipak, pop artists tend to not be on the front of the cover this is because they are already well known artists that there image doesn't need to be portrayed on the front. This helped me when making our digipak therefore we put an image of our artist on the inside cover. From looking at the conventions of a pop video it helped in aiding my development for many reasons. Firstly creating a mainstream artist from his outfit, portraying the artist as enjoyable and content with life, the lyrics of the song were based around love and I convey our genre through our artists dress and the setting of the video. Because it was a pop video not an indie type music video the setting was more basic rather than something different as I used a gym and a studio. Pop videos focus around dance, the song usually includes a lot of beats that are dance oriented which helped us when editing the video as I cut each clip to the beat of the song. I also wanted to make my video suit the target audience I aimed at, so from the research about genre I saw that teenagers tend to be into clubbing and dancing which I highlighted from having a DJ as the star image.

The internet further helped me when looking into locations to help aid my narrative ideas. In pop videos the location tends to be somewhere with a bit of a party atmosphere, so in my music video to create this feel I used a studio where I turned the lights out and used strobe lights to make it look more like a clubbing scene. Furthermore I looked at different gyms and got photos of them from online on google images so as a group we could work our narrative out around what gym equipment we could use. As a group we then found a gym that we hired out for a day that had all the equipment we needed to help film our music video. To help with this research I was able to find other pop music videos that were filmed in a studio or like a gym such as Ariana Grande ‘side to side’ and Eric Prydz ‘call on me’ which helped inspire me to look for similar locations that would appeal to a teenage audience. To help influence my narrative I gained ideas from looking at DJ EZ music videos and Hurtwood house videos of how I would cut my DJ to the beat and make him look like hes in a club rather than by himself in a boring studio such as using strobe lights.

I used my mobile phone to film an animatic. This enabled me to see how our music video would be shot scene by scene and look at the end when we film it. It enabled me to visualise each shot as we cut the animatic to the beat of the song and work out what sequences were not necessary or what needed to be added. To make our animatic I had to draw out each picture on a storyboard and then stick it on a A3 sheet of paper which I then filmed each shot and added the music in the background at the end making sure each shot matched the beat of the song so it made sense. From filming an amatic it achieved me to have a better performance and narrative element. It also showed me that I needed to add a variety of shots such as panning and more close ups. Without filming an animatic I wouldn’t of had a set idea of what the narrative actually was by seeing it drawn up visually helped me get a better understanding of what our idea was. It also helped me see how important some shots are that I was missing which I added when filming such as making sure I got a lot of close ups of the DJ to emphasis on the star image. This was more advanced than AS because in AS we did not make an animatic we had a shot by shot guide instead which didn't help as much because having something drawn up visually is easier to see and because we wrote on each shot we draw up the seconds it would be filmed and a small description of what is going on in that scene it helped me to create a better narrative and music video.

Filming my music video in A2 was more advanced than AS. This was because the filming of A2 needed a lot more shot types than AS such as more high angle and low angle shots and more close ups of our star image for our performance element and more wide shots to highlight the synthetic nature of our artist by showing his DJ decks and strobe lighting. The close ups also signified our star images happy and enjoyable emotions of society as he is content with life.

When editing my music video I used different tools on premiere pro and adobe after effects. Discontinuity editing was a big part of my music video and by using these different editing programmes I was able to be more creative by placing different elements of my music video in different areas. Specific editing techniques I learnt was adding a sharper and more ghostly feature to create a 80s tone to my video as my video was 80s themed this involved colour correction effects that were more vibrant in our gym setting. Therefore using these skills I learnt in A2 made my music video look more professional.

In order to get more audience feedback I used online tools to create a survey monkey questionnaire which helped me make changes in post-production. I used a website called surveymonkey that I made a questionnaire on that could be sent to other people to fill out so I got a bigger variety of qualitative data. This enabled me to then compare responses to see what I needed to improve in my music video

Digital technologies allowed me to research into similar digipaks and I was able to acquire new skills that included manipulating images how to create a digipak. I used the photo editing programme called photoshop to edit my image and make it look like a pop digipak by using different tools and filters. I researched into different digipaks such as Calvin Harris I was able to see that a common feature of a pop genre is that the star doesn’t feature on the front as there name is more important because pop stars are already very known so there image doesn’t need to be portrayed on the front. This influenced me into putting our stars name on the front in big and clear letters and his image being on the inside of the digipak. This alo helped with the website and merchandise as I found that our target audience loved the logo on the front of our digipak meaning they would be attracted to our merchandise which helped me market our star to an audience.

Planning and research into similar websites were far more creative this year as I learnt new skills from using wix to develop a website. I looked at artists similar to ours such as Chris Brown and analysed his website to see what I needed to include on my website to make it more effective and appeal to our target audience. This included tour dates, merchandise and information about our artist such as his birthday and interests in order for people to want to purchase his album.

I made sure my website linked with other online technologies such as facebook, twitter and youtube to spread the message of my artist. On the website I put links to a facebook page, twitter and youtube channel for my artist in order to attract a wider audience.

EVALUATION TASK 3

FEEDBACK ON MY DIGIPAK

The feedback we received from our target audience regarding our digipak was mainly positive, as our audience commented on how they liked the colour contrast of the red and black as they thought it stood out and that the design highlighted the pop/dance genre of our artist's music, which is what we intended. They also commented on the picture of our artist from the inside cover, and how they thought this picture really illustrated the synthetic nature of our artist and emphasised his DJ status. Our audience also thought that we demonstrated continuity throughout our digipak by using the same colours.

However, we received one criticism of our digipak which was that the writing on the front cover was not directly in the centre of the cover, which our audience found annoying to look at.

Overall we are very happy with the feedback we received on our digipak as it demonstrates how we have successfully created a product that appeals to our target audience and illustrates the synthetic star image of our artist.

FEEDBACK ON MY WEBSITE

The feedback we received from our target audience regarding our website was mainly positive, as our audience found our website easy to use as the bookmarks at the top of the page made it easy to navigate in order to find the information our audience were looking for. Our audience also liked the colour scheme and layout of our website, as they thought the bright colours helped to highlight the pop/ dance genre of our artist. They also stated how they found that our website was very informative as it included all the information our audience were looking for.

However, we did receive one criticism about our website, which was that our website doesn't include a link to our music video. Our audience felt that if we included this then it would help the audience see who the artist is that we are trying to sell.

Overall we felt that the audience feedback we were given about our website was mainly positive, and that we had successfully matched the design and layout of our website to the genre of our artist, therefore illustrating his star image.

SURVEY MONKEY

THESE ARE SOME RESPONSES WE RECIEVED
'DID YOU ENJOY OUR MUSIC VIDEO'

This chart below shows how 80% of people enjoyed our music video. Where as 20% didn't enjoy it. From listening to feedback from people we found the reason some people didn't enjoy our music video was because it wasn't the narrative didn't suit there taste as they were more into an indie genre, where as the other 80% l much preferred the pop genre hence why they said they enjoyed our music video.
DID YOU EXPECT THE ENDING OF OUR MUSIC VIDEO?

60% of people said they didn't expect the end of the music video, they found it a twist and very funny as it was a surprise. Where as the other people said from the appearance of our actor they could tell something like that was going to happen.

DO YOU THINK OUR MUSIC VIDEO REFLECTS BADLY ON WOMEN?

80% of people said it doesn't reflect badly on women as it is very stereotypical and felt women can relate to it easily which attracts them to wanting to watch it. However some women especially who voted on our survey found it patriarchal as if the male has the power of the women lust as they make it into a competition.

THIS IS OUR MAGAZINE WE MADE FOR OUR ARTIST

In order for artists to connect with their fans they need to make a connection in magazines advertising there image and information about them which will attract an audience. I have looked at several pop music magazines to help me design this cover.

I chose these images of Tyson Tyson because it gives a clear image to the audience of what he looks like. He looks very sexy and attractive which is a quality of a pop artist as he is focused on his image. I chose the larger photo of him to be positioned bigger than the other photos as it shows his synthetic image the most out of the other two photos which will attract a pop fan to wanting to read this magazine. This image also shows him being an urban dance performer who is hi-nrg. The quote underneath the photo ‘I express my feelings through DJing it changed my life to express my emotions’ can help fans connect as they may be able to relate.

AUDITIONS

COSTUMES IN RELAITON TO GENRE, TARGET AUDIENCE, STAR IMAGE AND SYNTHETIC IMAGE

MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT 1

This is the first draft for our music video. It is better to make more than one version for a music video as each time you can improve and make it better to eventually have your final draft.

By making a draft we could show it to our class and other people in order to get feedback on our video to help us improve on what to change to make it better. Each draft we make we will show our class and see what changes still need to be made till the final version is complete.

ANALYSIS OF EDITING

REHEARSALS

Rehearsals
For the rehearsals we were quite time limited and as we had 6 people in our video it was very hard to get everyone together on the same days because people had other things to do which we had to aware of as they were doing us a favor.
This being said all the producers and the three girls went to Pure gym in Edgware to practice what they will be doing e.g going on the machines and following what the gym instructor tells them to do.
We made them do this just so they got a feel for the  real thing, the level of profession they will be working with and the sort of equipment they will be using.

Tyson on the other hand is a professional DJ and already knows this sort of industry and therefore doesn't need much rehearsing as the only time we need him is when he's by himself, so with no interactions with anybody or doing anything to advanced we decided it wasn't necessary to do a rehearsal with Tyson

THE EDITING PROCESS SO FAR

The editing process so far.

To begin with I used a programme called premier pro in order to help me edit my music video by adding special effects and putting the clips together on a timeline. I had to put all my clips onto a USB stick which i converted from an SD card. Once all the clips were uploaded to my computer I was able to drag them onto premier pro and begin to edit them.

The editing firstly involved cutting some of the clips down as they were shot for to long. Once I did this I had to make sure they were put in the correct order on my timeline. This took a while as I had to work through each clip double checking the narrative made sense. After a few hours the clips all fitted together.

I then had to add the music in the background. I made sure the song didn't have any copyright and dragged it into premiere pro. I inserted it behind the clips and played my video. As I watched the video I had to make sure the song fitted to each clip. This became complicated as I saw some clips won't fit properly with the song so I had to move some of the clips around. But I eventually fixed it all and it looked really good.

As part of making my video look even better I added special effects from a programme called after effects. I used colour correcting to make more of an 80s feel to my music video and other effects such as fast and slow motion.

After this process I will now show my class to see what needs to be improved for next time to make it even better.

DEVELOPMENT OF WEBSITE

When creating our website we had to make many drafts because we had to decide where to place different images or bookmarks on our website to make it look as professional as possible.

Below are 2 drafts that we made which were screen recorded to show the website clearer.

DRAFT 1: I recieved feedback from my class on what they think needs improving or what they like about my webiste. From the feedback I recieved they said that we need to add some more tour dates and locations to the tour section of my website, and updating some of the images to more recent and relevant ones such as the album cover on the music playlist. As well as this, it was also evident from the feedback that we received that we needed to link my music video to the button on my website.

LEARNING HOW TO COLOUR CORRECT

Learning how to colour correct

Colour correcting is a very important part of editing. It makes sure that each shot from the same scene looks consistent. It gives you control over the final look of your production as well as upping the production value with little cost or labor.

Because colour correcting was something new to me I watched different videos on how to use colour correcting to enhance on my video. I also looked read steps online on how to colour correct which helped me a lot.

Here is a video I watched:

LEARNING HOW TO USE AFTER EFFECTS TO ENHANCE OUR WORK

Learning how to use after effects to enhance our work

Adobe after effects is an important programme used when editing. Therefore I had to learn how to use adobe after effects in order to enhance on my music video to make it look as professional as possible.

Below is a video I watched that taught me some effects

Once I watched this video I added my footage onto adobe after effects and tried out some of the tips from the video to see how I could make my work better. However I wanted to make my video look as professional as possible so I watched another video to enhance my video even more.

Below is another video I watched

This video helped when editing the arrow shooting effect.
